As I sit in the mountains, I’m reflecting on this:
When is enough enough?
Is it ok to want more?
What if I don’t want more but feel guilty that I don’t?
I was recently asked this question by a client and I realized this is a question that is on the minds of many entrepreneurs and business owners towards various stages of their lives.
Oftentimes I refer to this as expansion.
Do we ever stop expanding?
We’ve all seen movies, read stories or articles about the greedy corporate C level operators who milk everything they can for a profit, cutting jobs, going as lean as they can so they can line their pockets with more.
It’s like there is this bottomless cup they continue to fill however they can, however possible.
But I’m here to tell you, this is not the case for 99% of the business owners and entrepreneurs I work with or know.
They want to take care of their people, they want to create wealth for themselves and their families because many of them did start this way.
These entrepreneurs chose to take on large risk, giving up comfort and safety for themselves and their families in order to create something they hoped would create a positive impact for a better and brighter future.
Those first stages are hard for many, lots of uncertainty, unsure how people will adopt their vision for their product or service.
Constantly receiving feedback, sometimes positive and sometimes negative.
Yet, they have to hold true to the vision, despite the nights of waking up at 2am because you have a great idea and need to get to work on it right away, or the opposite of you have vendor receivables, banks and seemingly everyone with their hand out or in your pocket, only thing you have in that moment is stress and anxiety.
I’ve been there.
Over time though, this period of company growth shifts
We see light finally, we have traction.
We hire people to take care of the new and great problems we have of all the new business.
Things are looking up and the money, safety and security start to show up.
We mature as an entrepreneur. We rise to stabilize and thrive in our industry.
We create a niche for ourselves.
We establish great systems and processes.
We discover things like exceptional hiring, great marketing, leadership, delegating, growth mindsets, solid KPI’s and many others.
We can breathe a sigh of refreshing relief.
We’ve entered into a state of business maturity that allows us to take vacations, have a nice house, create investments, afford some of the niceties of life.
Over time, we build the business so well, we find ourselves with less to do, yet making more money.
Creating new revenue streams through offering supporting products and services.
This leads us to the question of NOW WHAT?
When you have everything you want, why keep going?
Expanding for the sake of expanding?
I’m here to tell you…
It’s OK to want more and…
..it’s OK to be more.
Expansion in business without purpose, really comes down to just being a collector.
Having purpose behind your expansion is a different story.
Expansion can be learning how to harness a higher power and connection through meditation
Expansion could be learning how to BE STILL…there’s a thought.
Learn how to relax so you can invite in a bigger vision for your life.
Expansion can be creating an entirely new skill set and mind set to serve a new audience.
There is a reason so many people die so soon after retirement.
They do not have PURPOSE, they lose routines and they did not have a plan and truly know who they are.
This is what I work with my clients on, how to build a life beyond yourself.
Expansion is a journey to continuously learn about yourself.
This is the journey that can never end.
Creating legacy sure, but creating bigger, more meaningful with less resistance.
If COMFORT IS POISON, then EXPANSION is the CURE.
I walk my clients through a process to:
We all want to build the best versions of ourselves possible and I want to ensure they get there.
